Custom Fabrication FAQs
What types of custom equipment can Harris Thermal fabricate?
Process vessels, columns and towers, heat exchangers, evaporators and condensers, tanks, code piping and ducting, and fabricated assemblies — built to a project-specific design rather than a catalogue. The range runs from nuclear test equipment under our NQA-1 quality program to concept-design specialty equipment with no standard design. Complete process-system design, and the supply of pumps, instrumentation and controls, are outside our standard scope.
Can Harris Thermal fabricate one-of-a-kind equipment from customer drawings?
Yes. We fabricate to customer drawings and specifications, and where a design is incomplete our in-house engineering team can take a concept to a buildable design. Both routes are routine — a large share of our work exists as a single unit.
What materials can Harris Thermal fabricate?
Carbon steels including low-temperature grades, stainless steels, duplex and super duplex, nickel alloys such as Ni 200, Monel, Inconel, Incoloy and Hastelloy, 6-Moly, copper alloys, titanium, zirconium and tantalum, clad materials, and customer-specific proprietary alloys. Weld procedures and material selection are matched to the service conditions — see the materials we fabricate.
Can Harris Thermal fabricate replacement equipment for an existing facility?
Yes. Replacement and retrofit equipment is built to match an existing installation, working from drawings, field measurements or the original unit — including equipment Harris Thermal did not originally build. Where an existing shell and tube heat exchanger can be re-tubed or re-rated instead, that is often the lower-cost route.
Can piping or other components be incorporated into a fabricated assembly?
Yes. Vessels, heat exchangers and process piping can be fit up on a skid frame or into a fabricated assembly in our shop and shipped as a unit, which reduces field fit-up time. Depending on project scope, ladders, platforms and structural supports can be included. Pumps, instrumentation and controls are not part of our standard supply scope.
How do I find out whether an unusual fabrication project is a fit for Harris Thermal?
Send the drawings or specification along with the materials, service conditions, and size and weight envelope. Our floor covers 50,000+ sq ft with 200,000 lb of lifting capacity, so the practical limits are usually material, code and schedule rather than size. If a project falls outside our scope we will say so directly — request an estimate to start that conversation.
